A Guide for International Students Coming to the USA

Starting your studies in the USA is exciting but can feel overwhelming. This guide will help you get ready for your new life. It covers everything from finding a place to live and managing your money to understanding healthcare and meeting new people.

With these simple and practical tips, you'll be ready to start your new adventure to study in USA smoothly and confidently.

1. Secure Your Accommodation

Finding accommodation is an important starting step, as it will make the base for your ongoing life in the USA. Universities typically offer several options:

  • On-campus housing –  Conveniently located and often includes meal plans, cleaning services, and access to university support services. This option helps you blend into campus life and meet other students easily while studying in USA.
  • Off-campus housing – These can be university-organized or independent rentals. Off-campus housing can offer more independence and might be cheaper than on-campus options. For your first year, living on campus might be the best option to help you adjust to your new environment easily.
  • Homestay – Living with a host family can offer a deep cultural experience and extra help. Your university or homestay organizations can help arrange this option.

When pursuing a Master’s in USA, finding suitable housing is an essential step. You can see what is available and the dates for the housing on your university’s housing website. Further to the point, you can get in touch with GlobalGrads if you are in doubt; we can support you in finding the options as they apply to you and even suggest the one.

2. Pack Your Things Smartly

Smart packing makes a difference. Don't forget these must-haves:

  • Passport, visa, I-20 or DS-2019 form, and other important paperwork. Keep both hard copies and digital copies stored securely.
  • Laptop, headphones, and adaptors for US sockets. A portable charger and a USB drive can also be useful.
  • Include a basic first-aid kit and a few important personal items, such as portable chargers, water bottles, and any necessary medications with prescriptions.
  • Suitable for the climate of your destination; the USA has various weather patterns. Pack layering options and comfortable shoes.
  • Wallet, international credit/debit cards, and some cash in US dollars. Consider bringing a money belt for extra security.
  • Miscellaneous: Basic toiletries, a towel, and a few items to make your new place feel like home, such as photos or small decorations.

Remember, when preparing for your journey to study in USA, remember that you can purchase many items upon arrival. To avoid excess baggage fees, pack smartly. Additionally, consider bringing a small guidebook or phrasebook, especially if English is not your first language.

3. Plan for Family Visits

If you want your family to join you, they can apply for the appropriate visas:

  • Visitor Visa (B-2): For short visits.
  • Dependent Visa (F-2 or J-2): For your spouse and children if you are on an F-1 or J-1 visa.

When considering studying in USA, make sure to check the specific requirements and application process for each visa type. Ensure that your family members have health insurance coverage for the duration of their stay.

4. Engage with Your Community

Building relationships from the beginning can make it easier for you to adjust.

  • Follow your university on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stay updated with news and events.
  • Join Facebook groups, Reddit subreddits, and WhatsApp groups for international students. These can be a great source of advice and support.
  • Attend orientation and other university events to meet new people and learn about available resources. Participate in clubs and organizations that match your interests.

5. Set Up a Bank Account

Setting up a US bank account is a breeze - you can often do it before you even set foot in the country! Big names like Chase Bank of America, and Wells Fargo are go-to choices for many. A local account makes life easier when it comes to money matters and helps you keep tabs on your cash. Some banks roll out the red carpet for students, offering accounts with zero monthly charges and not much cash needed to keep the account open.

6. Get a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

If you plan to work in the USA, you will need an SSN. Non-working students can apply for an ITIN for tax purposes. You can apply for an SSN at the local Social Security Administration office after arrival with your visa and proof of identity. Having an SSN can also be useful for opening a bank account, getting a cell phone plan, and renting an apartment.

7. Apply for a State ID Card

To avoid carrying your passport everywhere, apply for a state ID card through your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This is a convenient form of identification accepted across the USA. Check your state DMV website for the required documents and application process.

8. Get a US Driver’s License

Planning to drive? A valid US driver's license is a must. Each state has its own rules, but you'll need:

  • Proof of residency and legal presence in the USA
  • A vision test and possibly a written and road test
  • Payment of a fee (usually between $20 - $100)

Check your state DMV website for specific details. In some states, you can drive with your home country’s license for a limited period before you need to obtain a US license.

9. Understand the Healthcare System

Health insurance is mandatory for international students. Most universities offer health plans for students studying in the USA, but you can also purchase private insurance. Make sure to:

  • Understand what your insurance covers, including any co-pays and deductibles.
  • Know the location of the nearest hospital and clinic.
  • Have a list of any medications you take, and ensure they are available in the USA.
  • Register with the campus health center and keep emergency contact numbers handy.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to start your study in USA. Taking care of these essentials will help you settle in more smoothly, focus on your studies, and make the most of your experience.
